P&P Masthead

“By and large, our present problem is one of attitudes and implements. We are remodeling the Alhambra with a steam-shovel, and we are proud of our yardage. We shall hardly relinquish the shovel, which after all has many good points, but we are in need of gentler and more objective criteria for its successful use.”

Aldo Leopold A Sand County Almanac, 1949

About P&P

Some relationships are long familiar. Boy meets girl. Summer turns to fall. Other connections are newly recognized or scarcely affirmed. The DNA we share. The biosphere that supports all life.

What are the ties that draw people together and to place? How have these connections – and our understandings – evolved over time? What social-ecological relationships support a more reliable prosperity? How is meaningful change accelerated?

Part weblog, part web-based journal, People and Place hosts an inquiry on ideas that connect us.

Behind P&P
P&P publisher Ecotrust believes that our fundamental challenge is a broader understanding of the intimate relationship between the human condition and the health of all living systems. Although P&P covers topics related to Ecotrust's work, all P&P writings are solely attributable to individual authors. Howard Silverman is P&P editor. He has worked with Ecotrust since 1999, currently as senior writer and analyst.

We developed the P&P framework with the goal of flexibility in exploring connections among ideas. Thanks to Multimethod for development and design, to Shannon Wheeler for caricatures, and to Daniel Etra for assistance throughout.

A Platform for Connections

• P&P publishes in a volume/issue format. Each volume follows an overarching theme, divided among several issues. Each issue is built around the ideas of a featured author.
• Each P&P issue remains current for several weeks or months. During that time, we will continuously post new perspectives, add to the media library and recommend additional compass points.
• All articles are open for comment and moderated with the goal of fostering fruitful discussion.
